Do you think we’re shaped more by our experiences or by who we are?

i’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, especially now that i’m pregnant and everything feels bigger and heavier
• are we mostly who we’ve always been deep down… or do our experiences actually rewrite us?
• i used to think it was mostly nature — that i was just born a weird little alt girl who liked black clothes, loud music, and feeling everything too much
• but then life happened… bad relationships, losing friends, figuring out who i really was, and now growing a whole human inside me
• those experiences changed me in ways i never expected
• they made me softer in some places and stronger in others
• they taught me how to set boundaries i never had before and how to let myself be loved without running away
• but at my core… i still feel like that same sensitive, goofy, animal-loving nerd i’ve always been
• the experiences didn’t create me — they just carved and polished the version of me that was already there
• pregnancy has been the biggest teacher though… it’s forcing me to slow down, to be patient, to take care of myself in ways i never did before
• so maybe it’s both
• we’re born with a certain shape… but life keeps chiseling away at us, sometimes gently, sometimes brutally, until we become who we’re meant to be
i think experiences reveal who we really are more than they create us. they strip away the fake parts and show what’s underneath.
what do you think? are we mostly shaped by what happens to us… or by who we’ve always been deep down?
