Do you remember life before the internet?

– i was born in 2003 so the internet existed but it wasn’t in every pocket and on every screen like it is today. i remember when it was still kind of special, not something we were glued to 24/7. we had one family computer and it was dial-up, so slow you couldn’t even stay on long without tying up the phone line
– life felt slower and simpler back then. we actually went outside and played, talked to people face to face, and didn’t have this constant pressure to perform or compare ourselves to everyone else online. i didn’t get my first real smartphone until i was older and even then social media wasn’t as toxic as it is now
– my husband tells me stories about his apple iie and learning to program on it and how that sparked his whole journey into computer science. it’s wild how different our experiences with technology are, but that’s what makes us work so well together
– now that i’m pregnant with our baby girl this stuff weighs on me heavy. i don’t want her growing up thinking the world only exists through a screen. i want her to know real dirt under her nails, real conversations, real adventures, and the freedom to just be a kid without algorithms deciding who she should be
– the internet gave us connection but it also stole a lot of quiet and presence. i’m grateful for what it lets us do but i hope we can raise our daughter with balance — real human connection, curiosity, and the ability to think for herself instead of letting the cloud think for her
