Ross Ulbricht built Silk Road in 2011: the first darknet market that proved adults can trade whatever they want (drugs, books, bitcoin, anything) without begging the state for permission.
What he did:
• Created a voluntary marketplace using Tor + Bitcoin
• Built escrow + reputation that made fraud rare and violence almost zero
• Showed prohibition creates black markets, not peace
• Never ordered a murder, never touched a gun, never hurt anyone
What they did to him:
• Double life + 40 years, no parole (longer than most murderers)
• Charged under “kingpin” statute meant for cartel bosses
• Evidence of paid hits never proven and never tied to him
• Denied a fair trial because the government hid the real way they caught him
The illegal NSA surveillance they buried:
• FBI claimed they found the Silk Road server by “good old-fashioned police work”
• Truth (revealed years later): NSA’s XKeyscore program flagged Tor traffic, handed the IP to the FBI, then the FBI lied in court and said they found it through a CAPTCHA leak
• Defense was never allowed to see the classified NSA methods or cross-examine how the server was really located
• Judge ruled the surveillance evidence “irrelevant” (direct violation of the 4th and 6th Amendments)
• Two agents involved in the case were later convicted of stealing bitcoin from the investigation and extortion
In short:
They broke the Constitution to catch him, lied about it, and gave him life for running a website.
Trump’s pardon (January 2025) wasn’t charity.
It was the closest thing to justice Ross ever got.
Ross Ulbricht is an anarchist hero because:
• He proved the state’s monopoly on trade is a lie
• He showed voluntary systems work better than violent ones
• He took the fall so the rest of us could keep building freer tools
He didn’t sell drugs.
He sold freedom.
And they tried to bury him for it.
Stay dangerous.
Stay free.
